THEOLOGICAL LIBERALISM
Theological Liberalism is a movement within Protestantism which originated in Germany during
the “Age of reason” or “Enlightenment” of the 17th and 18th centuries.  It eventually found its way
into the churches and seminaries of America and blossomed after the American Civil War.
David O. Beale in his book, In Pursuit of Purity: American Fundamentalism since 1850,
addresses the topic on page 80, under the heading American Liberalism After the Civil War.
He points out that Darwinian evolution, comparative religion and higher criticism all contributed
to the growth of Liberalism.  He wrote, Evolution attacked the biblical account of creation as well
as bringing into question the depravity of man and the significance of the work of Christ.
Comparative religion attacked the uniqueness of Christianity as the way of salvation and the need
for divine revelation.  Biblical criticism attacked the integrity and historicity of Scripture.  Hence,
Liberalism while calling itself Christian, denies every major doctrine of true Christianity including,
but not limited to, the inerrancy and authority of the Bible, the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ,
the atoning value of His death on Calvary and His bodily resurrection.  Liberalism still serves
as the theological foundation for many of today’s major protestant denominations. [2 Timothy 1:13]
